Meet Estelle Clerc, CEO and Co-founder of CellX Biosolutions AG
Tell us more about CellX.
CellX develops nature-based bacterial solutions that break down persistent pollutants such as PFAS, pesticides, and pharmaceuticals. Our goal is to replace costly incineration with bio-based degradation, offering a scalable, sustainable, and cost-efficient alternative for industrial pollution treatment.
Please give some more details of your startup story: what was the “aha” moment that led to the idea for your startup?
During my PhD in marine microbiology at ETH Zurich, I studied how bacteria break down organic matter in the ocean using a novel microfluidic device. My “aha” moment came when I realized this technology could be adapted to isolate pollutant-degrading bacteria — a clear and powerful way to fight chemical pollution using nature itself.
So, what’s next for you — what’s a bold goal you’re chasing right now?
We’re now scaling from lab tests on pure pollutants to real industrial effluents, the contaminated wastewater coming from chemical production sites. Our goal is to validate the performance of our bacteria in these complex wastewater streams, proving their real-world effectiveness and preparing for pilot-scale implementation with industry partners.
Which decision (big or small) had the most unexpected positive impact on your startup?
Early in 2023, I tested our technology on PFAS, one of the most persistent and “non-degradable” pollutants, just to explore its limits. To my surprise, it worked. That bold decision gave us early proof of biodegradation and completely shaped our business strategy around PFAS-focused solutions.
How did you build your team, and what helps you maintain your startup culture?
I met my co-founders through the ETH Zurich innovation ecosystem, one was my (now former) startup coach, and the other was recommended by our IP advisor. We now maintain our culture through transparency, open communication, celebrating wins, and prioritizing sustainable work-life habits to ensure lasting impact.
If you could do it all over again, what would you do differently? What are your biggest learnings?
We’re still early in our journey, and I have much to learn, but the learning curve has been steep. I would tell myself to let go of preconceived ideas and expectations about being a CEO. Stay authentic, and be mindful of where you invest your time and energy.
Building a startup requires resilience. How do you stay focused during tough times?
That’s true, and I’m grateful to have co-founders with whom I can have honest conversations, and a team that supports each other through challenges. More broadly, having a strong support system, including an amazing partner and family, has been invaluable. Ultimately, the conviction that this work can create real planetary impact in the foreseeable future is what keeps me focused.
One piece of advice for someone who is just starting out with their startup?
Don’t underestimate the power of what others may perceive as “naïve.” Not knowing the rules can be your biggest asset, it allows you to question the status quo, explore bold ideas, and bring fresh solutions to stagnant fields.
What’s your outlook on the future of the Swiss startup scene, and how can it compete internationally?
The Swiss startup ecosystem is vibrant, with growing opportunities for funding, support, and networking. Zurich, in particular, is highly competitive, a magnet for global talent and a hub for deep-tech innovation. You can already see it happening now with the growing international community it attracts. This is a great time to be here!
What value do you see in being part of the Swiss Startup Association (personally and professionally)?
Being part of the Swiss Startup Association means joining a driven and diverse community of founders working to shape the future. It offers valuable opportunities to connect, exchange insights, and amplify the voice of Swiss innovation on a global scale.
Is there anything else you would like to share with us/the community?
We’re building CellX because we believe nature holds the key to solving some of our toughest environmental challenges. If you’re passionate about sustainable innovation, tackling PFAS pollution, or simply curious — we’d love to connect and exchange ideas!
