Why the e-ID Vote Matters for Swiss Startups
On September 28, 2025, Swiss voters will make a pivotal decision: the introduction of a state-issued electronic identity (e-ID). With a YES vote, Switzerland takes a major step forward toward a more secure, digital, and startup-friendly future.
What’s an e-ID and how does it work?
The Swiss e-ID is the official electronic proof of identity issued by the federal government. It enables citizens to verify their identity securely, both online (e.g. during age verification on a website) and offline (e.g. when purchasing alcohol in a supermarket). Unlike login credentials, the e-ID is not used to access services but functions as a government-certified digital ID, similar to a physical ID card.
The Swiss Confederation is the sole issuer of the e-ID and also oversees the trust infrastructure needed for secure operations. The system is expected to launch from Q3 2026, and citizens will be able to request their e-ID either online or in person. The online process involves downloading the official app, scanning your physical ID, and recording a brief video selfie. If your data matches the government registry, your e-ID is issued and stored in a wallet app on your smartphone. Alternatively, the application can be done at a passport office.
The e-ID is free of charge and entirely voluntary. It can be used to access digital government services or as proof of identity in daily life. While it doesn’t function as a digital signature, the e-ID can be used to obtain a qualified electronic signature from certified providers. It will also integrate with AGOV, the federal login solution used by cantons and municipalities, offering a secure way to verify identity for public services.
For questions or help with the e-ID, the government is setting up a dedicated support system, including a digital assistant and telephone support.
Why Startups should care about the new Swiss e-ID
1. Frictionless Digital Processes
Startups thrive on speed, automation, and scale. The e-ID enables instant, secure identity verification – ideal for tasks like age checks, signing digital contracts, and onboarding users without the paperwork. That’s a massive efficiency boost for lean, fast-moving teams.
2. A Trustworthy Foundation for Innovation
The e-ID introduces a nationally recognized, privacy-first digital identity layer that startups can build on. Whether you’re in fintech, health tech, or e-commerce, you’ll gain legal certainty and interoperability – things that are often hard to guarantee in the fragmented identity systems of today.
3. Competitive Edge for Switzerland as a Tech Hub
By establishing secure and scalable digital infrastructure, the e-ID makes Switzerland more attractive to investors, founders, and digital entrepreneurs. It strengthens the country’s position as a global innovation leader and supports the growth of high-impact startups.
By saying YES to the e-ID we’re saying yes to better digital services, safer online identities, more opportunities for startups and a more innovative, connected Switzerland.
