Please tell us about Treeless Pack

Treeless Pack, a pioneering spin-off from ETH Zurich founded in 2023, is dedicated to combating plastic pollution by revolutionizing material production with bio-based, fossil-free alternatives. Leveraging organically grown bacterial nanocellulose, free from toxic PFAS chemicals, we harness automated technology, organic waste, and microorganisms to reduce costs and environmental impact, sidestepping traditional, emission-heavy production methods.

Our team, comprised of two dedicated co-founders with expertise in mechanical engineering, biomaterials development, and microorganism research, collaborates closely with leading Swiss R&D groups. Together, we are transforming organic waste into functional, biodegradable materials, aiming to provide scalable, eco-friendly nanocellulose for a variety of applications, reducing global reliance on plastics and synthetic resins.

Our vision is to drive a sustainable revolution in the materials industry, making a significant impact on the environment and society.

Tell us more about your plans for 2024 and what is your long-term vision.

In 2024, we plan to close our first fundraising round to expand our team to advance the development of our automated production modules. We also plan to launch more pilot projects with key industry partners.

Our long-term vision is to lead the global shift to sustainable materials through two main strategies: first, by providing decentralized production technology, and second, by developing novel applications for our biomaterials. This dual approach aims to drastically reduce reliance on fossil-based plastics and promote a circular economy.

What has been the biggest success that you have achieved in your startup?

Our biggest success to date is the development and implementation of our pilot vertical farming module, which demonstrates the viability of scalable bacterial nanocellulose production. This achievement has enabled us to run several innovation projects with specialised R&D groups at Swiss research institutions and led to partnerships with industry leaders. Additionally, it has earned us recognition in several innovation competitions.

If you could do it all over again, what would you do differently? What are your biggest learnings?

If we could start over, we wouldn’t change much. The biggest benefit of building your startup is the huge learning, and you have to embrace the journey to gain this knowledge. Every failure is a valuable learning opportunity that you don’t want to miss, so you have to expose yourself to as many challenges as possible. Learning to make mistakes early on is key. If there’s one thing I might have done differently, it would be to reach out to partners with the right expertise earlier and to master the art of deals and collaboration sooner.

What motivates you to continue your business every day?

Our daily motivation stems from our mission to end plastic pollution and the potential to make a significant environmental, but also health impact. Each day, we are driven by the progress we make towards creating a sustainable future and the positive feedback from our partners and customers. Personally, what keeps me going is the privilege of meeting fascinating, proactive and supportive people within the startup ecosystem, including current and former founders, scientists working on cutting-edge technologies, senior executives or even politicians.

One piece of advice for someone who is just starting out with their startup?

Start with a clear mission that addresses a real problem. Focus on building a strong, dedicated team and don’t be afraid to pivot if needed. Stay resilient as everything will take longer as planned, reach out early on to experts in the respective field, and prioritise sustainable growth over quick wins.

What does it mean to you to be a member of the Swiss Startup Association?

Being a member of the Swiss Startup Association provides invaluable networking opportunities, access to resources, and support from a community of like-minded entrepreneurs.
Personally, it has been a source of inspiration, while professionally, it opens doors to new collaborations and potential funding.

Would you recommend joining the Swiss Startup Association? Why?

I recommend joining the Swiss Startup Association. The association offers a wealth of resources, networking opportunities, and a supportive community that is crucial for any startup looking to grow and succeed in Switzerland’s competitive landscape.

Have you ever visited the events of the Swiss Startup Association? If yes, which ones? Would you recommend them?

We have attended several online webinars and look forward to engaging more in the future, particularly in founder’s dinner events or sector-specific networking sessions. These events are highly valuable for gaining insights from fellow founders, making connections, and staying updated with industry trends.

Is there anything that we haven’t asked you that you would like to share with the community?

We are excited about our upcoming projects and collaborations. We’re also fundraising so if you’re looking for an investment opportunity in innovative solutions to replace fossil-based plastics, we’d love to connect and explore potential engagements.
