Sandro Ciluro, Sedimentum

Meet our Premium Member: Sandro Cilurzo, CEO & Co-Founder of Sedimentum

– Sandro, could you please tell us more about Sedimentum?

Sedimentum is a Swiss tech startup that has developed a contactless and intelligent emergency detector that automatically calls for help in case of an emergency at home. Caregivers (e.g. relatives) are informed, for example, about falls and other health-threatening events and can thus take the necessary measures in a timely manner to help the person at risk.

We founded Sedimentum in 2019 and we have 17 employees at the moment.

– Why did you found Sedimentum?

Before I co-founded Sedimentum, I was responsible for a psychiatric clinic’s information and cyber security. It’s usually challenging to ensure patient safety 24 hours a day, and even more so in an inpatient environment. As a result, falls are frequently reported during the stay and especially after leaving (at home). I couldn’t walk away from this challenging and complex problem. That’s why I founded Sedimentum.

It quickly became evident that falling isn’t just a problem in inpatient facilities; the danger is even more severe at home. Slip and fall accidents can have serious outcomes, especially for older people living alone. Being autonomous and safe at home is an essential need for seniors. The constantly rising market demand of seniors, as well as their relatives, confirmed this to us. Therefore, Sedimentum’s main target are private households. With our SAFE-living solution, seniors are enabled to live autonomously at home and without worry.  We offer the “SaaS” solution elderly people have always been looking for: Safety-as-a-Service.

– What is your long-term vision?

We launched our product for the private consumer in the summer of 2022. Our main focus at the moment is to accelerate sales within Switzerland. The second step will be to enter the DACH market. Our long-term goal is to ensure an autonomous, safe, and happy life in every home. This means making our product widely available in different markets globally.

In addition, we are really proud of our tech-stack. Sedimentum’s tech-stack is truly unique. It’s important to highlight that we developed a custom chip, which is able to sense motion activities which are continuously analyzed in real-time by our fully proprietary AI-software. As every single piece is tailor-made within our tech-stack, we are able to deliver a different kind of customer experience as a consequence. The main priority for us is to create as much customer value as possible by utilizing the maximum potential of our technology.

– What has been the biggest success that you have achieved in Sedimentum?

To develop a meaningful product that empowers seniors to stay as long as possible in their own homes. We are thrilled with our product launch for private consumers and it brings us great and deep satisfaction to see that our customers and their loved ones are happy to have our product in their homes.

– If you could do it all over again, what would you do differently? What are your biggest learnings?

I would focus more and try as hard as possible to avoid (any) distractions. As a first-time founder, it is sometimes challenging to know where your priorities are. FOMO and “finding the signal in such a noisy world” can be tough, specifically when one is overwhelmed by the many options available. My biggest learning is: If you say yes to an opportunity, you are indirectly saying no to another.

– What motivates you to continue your business every day?

Our mission is to provide a safe and happy home and connect families. Our product is purpose-driven and I am fully convinced we will change the way seniors and their relatives will live – real empowerment through our technology. This motivates me to work day and night with my amazing team to have a profound positive impact on the lives of many people .

– One piece of advice for someone who is just starting out with their startup?

My advice is to always believe in yourself. On the path of building a venture, you will meet many who will say your idea will not work. Such statements should encourage you that you are on the right path.

– What does it mean to you to be a member of the Swiss Startup Association? (personally, and professionally)

I believe that the Swiss startup ecosystem has a lot of catching up to do. Therefore, organizations like the Swiss Startup Association are important to strengthen the overall ecosystem. As a founder, supporting organizations like SSA is truly meaningful for me. SSA empowers the entire Swiss start-up environment and simultaneously encourages future founders as well through their initiatives.

– Would you recommend joining the Swiss Startup Association?

Yes, this is a great opportunity to expand the network, exchange experiences with like-minded people and help the Swiss start-up ecosystem.
