How to Optimize Your Startup Marketing Budget

Most startup teams know marketing is important. What fewer understand is how to make it work without setting money on fire. In the session, co-hosted with LANE Digital, Amrita Etchepareborda (CEO), Céline Arethens (Founder), and Mathilde Renevey (Project Manager) shared what they’ve learned helping startups grow with lean budgets and clear priorities. Their message was simple. Start with strategy. Then execute with purpose. Here’re some tips on what every Startup should focus:

Strategy first. Always.

It sounds basic, but most startups still skip this part. The LANE team made it clear. Without a strategy, even the best tools and campaigns will fail. Knowing your customer, defining your goals, and mapping your value is what turns actions into results. It’s like building a house. If there’s no foundation, there won’t be no structure.

Watch your budget

Many startups come to LANE after wasting most of their budget. They built a fancy website. They ran ads. They hired someone to post content. None of it delivered wanted results. The reason is usually the same: no metrics, no tracking, and no clear offer. One of the most common mistakes is investing early in things that look good but do not convert. Their advice was clear. Startups should spend only after they know what works. Not the other way around.

Outsourcing is smarter than early hiring

Hiring a marketer full-time feels like a milestone. But in reality, it often adds pressure without adding clarity. In Switzerland, especially, the cost of hiring before you know what you need is high. Agencies and freelancers can move faster, adapt more easily, and save you months of trial and error.

Start with one clear persona

Many founders wait too long trying to perfect their user persona. The reality is, you just need a starting point. Your persona will evolve. Your job is to build for one user first, then learn from the response. Overthinking personas leads to delays. Clarity drives action.

Organic first, Paid later

Paid ads are not the fast lane if your organic channels are weak. SEO, reviews, email lists, and content all matter before spending money on traffic. Startup founders should focus on trust and visibility. Build authority where your customers already spend time. This means thoughtful posts on LinkedIn, reviews on Google, and useful content that answers real questions.

Build process before adding tools

Automation is not a fix for confusion. It only scales what already works. Before setting up email sequences or CRMs, define your flow. Who contacts leads, when follow-ups happen, what happens after a call. Then automate. Skipping this step creates a leaky funnel where leads drop out and no one knows why.

Content quality wins

Daily posts mean nothing if no one cares. The LANE team recommends a content calendar, a consistent voice, and a focus on value. Founders should be involved. People want to hear real stories. Personal voice beats polished marketing. As for branding, clean and simple is enough at the start. A logo, a few brand colors, and a mobile-friendly website will do more than a six-month rebranding.

Tools that actually help

A few tools were mentioned that startups can use without overwhelming themselves:

  • ChatGPT for content structure and ideation
  • Captions app for quick mobile video creation
  • Lemlist for outbound emails and campaigns

Each of these fits into a lean process and can be adapted to different stages of growth.

Final thought

Marketing should never feel random. With the right plan, even small budgets go far. Without it, no budget is enough. Startups that define their strategy, focus on what matters, and execute with discipline will outperform those that chase tactics. As the LANE team put it: You do not need to do everything. You need to do the right few things, in the right order.
