Meet our Premium Member Frederik Nieden – CTO of Apartolino Schweiz GmbH

Please tell us about Apartolino.

Apartolino is a modern and innovative rental platform for temporary living. Apartolino was founded in 2019 when Raphael and I teamed up to develop a real alternative to traditional booking platforms. Our goal is to provide a true alternative to classic booking platforms, with a focus on simple, intuitive operation and automated processes. We focus on the needs of the temporary housing industry, setting ourselves apart from hotel booking platforms. Our partners, the landlords, can easily use Apartolino as a complementary tool in their daily business. The platform enables our customers to securely rent a serviced apartment for long-term stays online in just a few steps.

Tell us more about your plans for 2023. What is your long-term vision?

In 2023, we plan to expand our presence in the market and find new partners. In the long term, we want to establish ourselves as the leading platform for temporary housing in Switzerland by using innovative technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML).

What has been the biggest success that you have achieved in your startup?

Our greatest success is the development of a user-friendly and secure platform that allows people to easily and conveniently find and rent furnished apartments for long-term stays online.

If you could do it all over again, what would you do differently? What are your biggest learnings?

If we could do it all over again, we would shift our focus to the compelling needs of our partners and get a better sense of them quicker to ensure our solution meets their requirements. When developing the solution, it is easy to get lost in the details and different implementation options. That said, as CTO, I’m proud that we focused on scalability from the beginning and chose to operate in the AWS cloud ecosystem. We also had our infrastructure reviewed early on by external AWS partners like Swisscom. These decisions have helped to make our platform efficient and future-proof.

What motivates you to continue your business every day?

The opportunity to help people find a temporary home and make the housing market more efficient motivates us to continue our business every day. Our partnerships with providers of serviced apartments and co-living opportunities, who place their offers on our platform, play an important role in this. By working with these partners, we are helping to provide more options for people’s housing needs, both domestically and internationally. These partnerships are of great importance to us, and we look forward to continuing to expand our network of providers to offer a wide range of housing solutions to our customers.

One piece of advice for someone who is just starting out with their startup?

My advice for someone just starting their startup is to always be open to feedback and adjustments, build a strong network and believe passionately in their idea. Take advantage of the opportunities that come from working with established partners like Swisscom and AWS. For example, we had our infrastructure reviewed by Swisscom as part of an architecture review and participated in the AWS Activate program, which provided valuable support and resources to help us build and scale our platform. Such partnerships can help your startup grow faster and establish itself in the market.

What does it mean to you to be a member of the Swiss Startup Association?

For us, being a member of the Swiss Startup Association means being part of a community of like-minded people who support and promote each other. Personally, it gives us the opportunity to learn from other startups and professionally, it expands our networking opportunities.

Yes, I would recommend joining the Swiss Startup Association as it provides an excellent platform for networking, collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Have you ever visited the events of the Swiss Startup Association?

Yes, Raphael and I attended the Founder Dinner in Winterthur. It was a great evening with exciting conversations among founders, a top location in the heart of Winterthur and good food. I can recommend this to everyone.

Is there anything that we haven’t asked you that you would like to share with us/the community?

I would like to let the community know that we are always open to partnerships and collaboration to further develop our platform and shape the future of temporary housing together.
